The club is local to Barbara's old neighbourhood. This is pretty tame compared to some of the stuff that goes on there.

A little update. Apparently the team thought that they may not be able to field a full compliment as most of them were away on a stag weekend the night before. The league is usually accommodating if there are difficulties, they are all amateurs anyway but being hungover is not the usual excuse.
I always understood the definition of a white elephant to be something you've been using or had laying around the house for a very long time. No specific monetary value. This year I gave marble book ends my in-laws had in their house as far back as I can remember. That would be the early 1960's
I always had trouble reconciling the idea of a white elephant sale/exchange with the story behind the phrase. I mean, the whole idea of "blessing" someone with a white elephant is that they can't get rid of it, but keeping it creates a hardship.
