On your iPhone, go into settings. Thanks Jim, I'll look into that one when I've got the ;laptop sorted. I've switched iCloud off, but it didn't delete the data. I've taken a gamble and deleted the directory manually. Or at least, I am deleting.. It's been running for 40 minutes now and by my calculations could take 15 hours at this rate.

Overnight it came up with a message saying "This data is too large to recycle, do you want to permanently delete it?"
I replied Yes, and it is now saying that it will take "More than a day". This is sheer madness.

You are probably right, Marty. To be honest, there's no data on it. It is literally my spare machine. I was already prepared to accept that I might cause permanent damage to the build by just deleting files. Still, it gives it some exercise.
11% of the 9.8 million files have now been deleted. ETA another 18 hours.

If I was you, I'd have renamed the directory first to "hide" the file and see what the results were. Easy to undo if necessary and fast.

Too late. It's now at 15% deleted. The ETA has regressed to "more than a day".

It took about 36 hours, then the screen went blank. No amount of Returnkey, Esc key or swearing brought it back to life, so I powered it off and on again. Miracles! It booted and allowed me back with about 450 more GB of space than I used to have. I have found more large folders in the Apple sub-directory, so I'll delete those and then a Defrag will be in order I think.
I'm getting there. I need a cup of tea.

That machine has now got about 75% free space on its disc, but it is still running slow.
On older versions of Windows, you used to be able to look and see which processes were using which resources. Does anybody know where I can find that in W10?

Thanks Gimpy. It's showing hardly any activity. It must just be getting old, like all of us.

Malc, Are your Windows updates current? My Granddaughter was one of those that just closed the lid on her laptop and never restarted the computer. It got to a snail's pace before she said something.

Thanks Gimpy but it tends to lock up every now and then, so a hard reset is the only way to get it going again. It should be fully up to date.

They want you to buy a new PC so they build in ways to make it run slower? Honestly I had several Dell laptops and the useful life was about 2 years and then they were slow as molasses. I used to think it was that as they added updates it was more intense on requiring resources that the old hardware couldn’t handle.

In my experience, it's Windows that gets bloated and corrupt over time. I've fixed a fair number of PCs by blowing their brains out and starting over. The hardware is generally fine.
Many PCs, laptops in particular, have a "restore" partition on the harddrive. This will take you back to factory defaults.

There wasn't a Restore point on the machine, so I opted for a full wipe-everything-and-start-again install. It appeared to download what it needed, but is now stuck on "Resetting this PC 1%". It's been 1% for over an hour. I hate computers. ::Edit:: I just heard the fan go into overdrive and looked over. 3%, and now 4%. Woohoo::

How long does it take for an alcoholic to "dry out"? If it helps, said alcoholic self-committed, so we're talking more about the physical effects. How long do the "DTs" last?

It depends on how heavy and how long they have been drinking. Usual treatment here is Librium (chlordiazepoxide), a reducing dose for 8 to 4 days.

I'm more than old enough to recall carbureted cars needing adjustment or jet changes for continued use at high altitudes.
Do fuel injected cars require programing changes? Last month I drove up Pike' Peak and my LeBaron ran like a swiss watch. Fuel consumption in the area seemed to be in the average range of here in the flatlands at 24 to 26 MPG.

They adjust themselves, to a point. Maybe 6-7,000', after that the mixture gets lean enough to cause engine damage if it was actually a sensor failure at sea level.
Turbo chargers on the other hand, work well at any altitude. Compressed air and all.

Do fuel injected cars require programing changes? If you were doing it consistently, it might be worth looking at getting a remap if the performance suffers.

What Graham said.
For my epic road trip in 2017, which included a LOT of higher elevations (but took the train from Manitou Springs to Pike's Peak), we had read about cars needing adjusting, so I asked when I took it in for its pre-trip oil change and lookover, and the mechanic said that someone who lives in a higher elevation might want to have it checked if they see a performance issue, but for a one-off event, it hasn't been a thing for most vehicles made in the past 30 years or so.

What's the best way to deal with Chance's separation anxiety? It's always been bad, but, now I can't even do something in the driveway without him screaming and hollering to be with me. I've always had a gate at the top of the stairs and he never started jumping it until Shell moved out. He was only jumping it when scared of a thunderstorm, now he's jumping it daily. He's destroyed the door going into the garage from my basement and often runs out when I open the door to pull the car in. Thankfully, he hasn't taken off, yet.
I've thought about getting another dog, but, I worry that the introduction of another dog would stress him even more. I've seen him put the smackdown on Bumpy and my mom's dog, but he never actually bit them. Just pinned them down and yelled at them. My preference for bigger dogs has me worried that someone would get hurt.
I cannot get him into a kennel. Never been able to get him in one. If I lock him in a room, I'll lose the door in no time.

I wonder if a Thundershirt would work for him? They're supposed to be good for calming dogs. I've never had to use them but I know a few who have and they've liked them.

The problem with those is putting a shirt on him and keeping it on all day while I'm at work. When I'm home and it storms, he can cling to me.
