It's time to renew my antivirus subscription. What do you use? How much is it? I currently have Norton 360 that came with LifeLock (I had an identity theft issue), it was a fairly cheap intro, but now they want $680+ for another year. I don't think so. McAfee bugged me with teasers, "Oh, I found an issue!" I clicked to check on it... "Nuh-uh, you have to pay $50-$100 more for the upgraded version to find out what the issue is!" It also wouldn't let me white list sites and programs my work uses.

Haven’t used antivirus in years. Windows Defender has been pretty solid. Use it at work and home.

In fact, they offer what they call home protection. Any device conntected to their network TVs, computers, etc, that go kaput are covered up to $5000 to replace no questions asked.

Windows Defender that is built into Windows is considered as solid as any. Why pay more?

Stan, Frodi, Graham, what GPS do you use while riding? I got lost today and tried Google Maps relaying directions to my Bluetooth helmet and the first half of the directions kept getting cut off.
Usually I just know where I am but road closures happened.

I use a Garmin 396. Even with that I still plan my route and rtend to use the sat nav only for the last few miles thro backroads. If I use it for the full journey it takes me down boreens the try and save time/distance. While this can be interesting you lose time as you can seldom keep to the speed limit on backroads. For instance today i was on a boreen with a speed limit of 80kph (50mph). It was one car wide with grass growing down the middle and high hedges on either side so you could at most only see about 100 yards in the distance. Go at 80 and something comes the other way, there is no way you would have time to stop.

Stan, Frodi, Graham, what GPS do you use while riding? I have a TomTom Rider 550 which replaced my old TomTom Rider v2.
It sits on a powered cradle on my handlebars as the internal battery only lasts about 5 hours. I connect it to the Optimate battery tender lead which, of course, isn't being used when I'm riding, and it has an "extra sensitivity" mode that means it works ok with gloved hands.
It does have useful features eg if you have buy the Traffic subscription, it can re-route you around traffic jams and closed roads etc like you experienced and I can just use it as a regular sat nav or set up routes using waypoints if I want to go down specific roads which might not be the fastest route.
Also it has an "Plan a Thrill" mode which lets you select whether you want to get from A to B via twisty roads, but sometimes it can take you down what are almost farm tracks because it only looks at the number of bends, so I prefer to choose my own route.
You can record a "track" which means you can go off exploring and then look at where you went later if you liked a certain road, but if you just reload the track on its own and you stopped off at a service area, it will try to get you to go into that service area again!
To be honest, I rather preferred the v2 because the interface was simple and the sat nav was easy to use and update routes etc on the fly. The 550 is more capable, but they added a lot of bells and whistles and the interface isn't always as intuitive as you might expect, so it becomes a bit of a faff.
However it's good enough for what I need it for, although I've not used Garmin or other brands, so I can't really compare it with any of them.

I'm looking for some electrical advice.
I have an old fluorescent light fixture that uses an 18" long single tube. The bulb died, and I basically was forced to replace it with an LED tube that has the same connections at the ends. But the LED doesn't light. The fixture itself is the type without ballasts, but uses the small cylindrical starter.
Would replacing the starter help, or is the fixture too old to use the LED tube?

LED tubes come in a plug and play model that will work with the old technology. The tube may be the problem since there are both kinds. If you get the "straight" LED the fixture will need to be wired direct to the lamp contacts.
Google has a few good graphics on it.

Well I learned something here too Gimpy, thanks! I didn’t know such a swap could even be done. I would have just changed fixtures completely.

OK folks, I've got a printing problem. A Mac desktop connected to an HP Color Laser 150. The printer is less than 12 months old. The Mac can see and talk to the printer. I can see a low toner warning, if I remove the paper tray the Mac says "your printer has no paper". If I unplug the mains, it says "offline". I can read the page count numbers etc.So there are two-way comms established.
Last night I tried to print a 3 page word document. Nothing happened. In total I fought for nearly four hours in a very hot sticky room, using plenty of industrial-strength language. Anything I send to the printer, I can see it appear in the queue, the status changes from ready, to printing to finished and it disappears from the queue. Except no paper has been moved. The printer might give the odd click, indicating that something is talking to it, but no more.
At one point last night I unplugged the printer for ten minutes, powered it back up, asked for a test print from the printer app on the Mac and it successfully printed a test page. I then asked for the 3 page Word document, but it didn't.
I have subsequently tried to replicate this single success but with no luck.
As far as I am aware, nothing has changed since I last used it, which would have been at most 7 days previously. I print a pub quiz every Sunday evening.
It is connected by cable as my home Wifi isn't set up in my temporary home. If I connect the cable to my Windows laptop, (which it has probably never been before) it says the printer is "Offline", but I suspect it is looking for it on the Wifi rather than by cable.
I have rebooted the Mac and the printer a number of times. There is a "low toner" warning, but it says to "buy a new one but don't replace it yet".
Any suggestions?

I don’t know specifically though I have an issue that may or may not be related. One of the statements I collect online that I print a copy for my files will not print as a PDF from the web browser when I download it. It is the only one that won’t and it is consistent with this one statement. I have to save the file (I do anyway) and open it in Adobe PDF app to print it. A nuisance extra step in my case. Every other statement will print the PDF from the web browser. Now to be fair I am on Mac hardware but the browser is in a Windows VM but with Parallels that manages the VM on the Mac does use the Mac print drivers, etc. Maybe try saving your doc in PDF format and see if it prints as a PDF?

I see what you are saying Marty, but this is in the exact same format that I printed last week. And anyway, it isn't just that document. Any print from any app or even the Test Print function behaves the same way. I have just tried to print a spreadsheet. The document appeared in the queue, saying "Ready", the printer made a quiet electronic click ( not a clunking paper jam noise) and the document was "Printing" and "Finished" and then gone. This is weird.

No, Jim, because I thought that if I had 2-way comms, the cable must be OK. The first rule of troubleshooting is always start simple. You know that.

OK, had to order a cable, none stocked locally, will be a couple of days, it must be coming from outside the country.
I have reset the printer to factory defauilts. I have reset the Wifi settings. I have tried to get the Mac to install the printer by Wifi but it says it can't see it, even though my Windows laptop can see it at full strength I have de-installed and re-installed the printer on the Mac.
Still no joy. I contacted HP, they say the printer is 14 months old and therefore out of warranty. Their troubleshooting package only works on Windows.
What is it about printers?

I have again connected the printer to my Windows machine. I noticed that I had two different HP150 entries in the printer selection. I chose the other one, and successfully printed a test page. I suspect one is a wireless set up and the other a wired config.
So, the printer and cable must be OK? Yes? No?
I'll try to see if I can manually set up a new printer on the Mac.

OK, new cable has finally arrived, swapped out, no change.
I pulled the power on the printer, installed the new cable, the printer app says the printer is offline. I powered it up and after about thirty seconds the message changes to Toner Low. I request a test page, it goes through all the motions of Looking for Printer Printer Ready Printing in Progress. Printing done.
But nothing happens.
This is driving me crazy.

Try a different printer or try yours on someone else's machine. It could just be a faulty unit.

I now have a problem with my iPhone. It is an iPhone 6s Plus with 16GB of data. Yes, ancient, I know.
When I try to access Facebook, it says it can't install it and 'come back later'. It used to work. The phone says FB was last used in March.
I use the phone very little. Out of the 16GB of storage, 1 GB is photos, apps, mail etc, 7GB is IOS, 5GB is System Data leaving 3GB free.
Is this a memory issue, or is the phone so 'old' that Apple just don't want it to work so that I buy a new one.
Or have I switched a function off somewhere. I know nothing about 'Apps', I don't know how to troubleshoot them.

The phone is too old. The 6s is no longer supported and the 7 is being phased out with the next major OS release.

Welcome to the old phone club. I have a Samsung S6 edge about the same vintage and some apps are starting to fail to update.
