"Wash your hands" won't work when there's no soap available.

Ireland's first death from Covid 19 comes from just around the corner from my pharmacy. I don't think that she was a customer as I have not be contacted by the contacts team (yet!) Officially pharmacists have not heard anything from the authorities in Irealnd at all.

I'm more afraid of the people panicking than I am of CV-19.

"Wash your hands" won't work when there's no soap available. That’s when a hand sanitizer like Purell comes in as a close second best.

The NBA has suspended their season. This is completely uncharted territory. A player on the Utah Jazz has tested positive. I am also aware that our Toronto Raptors just played Utah on Monday. Waiting to hear that one or more players on the Raptors are also infected now.

I've been looking to this map. It shows how the virus is spreading and it updates when there are new cases.

So is anybody changing their mind on how worried they are with what has happened in the last 24 hours? Should we be more worried than we are?
I'm not sure. I'm worried for my dad as he's in the high risk category, I'm trying to convince him he doesn't need to go some of the places he does on a daily basis, he needs to limit his exposure.

I work for a k-12 school, daughter in college. We both have spring break next week, and have both been told that classes/work will be online from home for two weeks after.

I think this is so over hyped. 1200 cases in the US with 40 deaths. With over 300 million people it is statistically zero. I don't care at all. What I don't understand is the run on toilet paper. The Coronavirus doesn't make you crap. Most stores around me are almost completely sold out of toilet paper. What a bunch of freaking idiots.

The Coronavirus doesn't make you crap. No, but as soon as one man coughs, twenty others shit themselves.

I think this is so over hyped. 1200 cases in the US with 40 deaths. With over 300 million people it is statistically zero. The trouble is that we haven't been testing. Other countries, South Korea in particular, have run 100 of thousands of tests. We're way behind on testing and really don't know how many cases there are (8550 tests in the US vs 210,000 in South Korea, as of Mar 9). Best guess, there are significantly more cases than have been reported, which in turn means that the fatality rate is much lower. Epidemics tend to follow a bell shaped curve. We can't know the severity or where we are on the curve without more testing.

Just found out that our plant in Turin is almost completely shut down. All office workers are working from home and they have a skeleton crew working the production floor.
In the US, they're even sending people home for having sneezing fits and blowing their nose too much. It's just a matter of time before I get walked out as I'm ALWAYS sneezing.

They're not just buying up toilet paper. They're buying up all kinds of stuff. I think they're stocking up on stuff so they don't have to go shopping anytime soon. While doing that, they're leaving a lot of other people without the supplies they need.
I know a lot is happening, but I'm still not any more worried about the virus than I was at the start. I know it's bad and I know it's spreading. The results we're seeing were expected. So, the virus hit some famous people, one who happens to be an NBA player and now NBA is suspended. Probably other professional sports will follow. School sports are already shut down, a lot of people are being told to work from home, etc.
But the virus is not as scary as the people who are panicking.
1,200 people out 300 millions is a very small number. But many more people are going to get this virus. There is no vaccine for it, no cure, and there is still so much about it that is not known. Plus, there are no hygiene products to be found, so how are we going to wash our hands?
I stand by what I said before. Most people who get CV-19 will get through it. I could be wrong, though. I'm often wrong. So, who knows?

I was responding to everyone on here, and I was mostly thinking about what Mank said when I wrote that part.
There are probably many more people carrying the virus, but at the time I wrote that, there were 1,200 confirmed cases. Now it says 1,300.

Anyone being dismissive about the scope of this is delusional. To borrow a turn of phrase from the POTUS (not about this, just his general way) “It’s going to be huge! This will be everywhere!”
Seriously though lack of testing in the US is one problem. Lack of people with healthcare willing to see a Dr when they are sick is another problem. So many will be sick with it and not seek treatment or isolation and they will spread it to many others. Look at the jackass Lawyer in New Rochelle, NY. They’ve traced 100 other cases directly to him.

It seems that the panic over it is worse than the actual threat. They are closing schools, cancelling everything under the sun, and basically going into full blown craziness over this. I think there should be precautions taken, but are we going too far? I don't recall anywhere close to the fear, uncertainly, and doubt that I am seeing with this. What is making the COVID-19 so much worse then past ones?

I think it is because this one can spread more readily and because you can be contagious for some time before showing any symptoms whatsoever. So not even knowing you are sick.

As the great K said "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals," so I get the panic that is happening, but the question is why are we panicking over this?

My main concern for now is that I or my staff will be deemed to have been in contact with a suspected case thus effectly shutting me down for at least two weeks. That's a big hit for me. Also the HSE (Health Service executive) doesn't give a F*** for pharmacists. They have given guidance and PPE to all other heathcare workers and studiously ignored pharmacists. This could come back to bite them in the bum but for now they don't care.

Maybe the future is, no one leaves their home.
I'm going to try pulling away from all this now and finally watch the movie "Contagion" that I bought on Amazon the other day.

Well, I am on the verge of being required to WFH. My after hours Uber activities *might* be enough for them to tell me to keep my ass at the house. Waiting to hear from HR.
