Hope everyone here at JAD has a safe Memorial Day. Let us not forget all who made the ultimate sacrifice.

I think we have a spammer in here trying to sell fake passports and licenses.
The posts should be deleted and he should be banned.

Watching Forged in Fire tonight and I see a familiar face. Looks like Char's niece made another appearance.

Been there, done that, luckily without so serious consequences. When I was about 6 y.o. I visited my uncle's farm in Ireland. We went muck spreading, which involved getting a tractor shovel full of cowshit, and three kids standing in the bucket, facing backwards, kicking the muck out as the tractor was driven across the pasture. I slipped and my leg went under the bucket, trapped between it and the ground as we drove along. My uncle mistook my screams of pain for screams of a kid having the time of his life. (The other two kids were his own grandchildren). Luckily no long-lasting damage was done, just some very bad bruising and probably torn tendons. Nobody even considered taking me to hospital or a doctor. Farmers might live in a different world, but they grow the food on your plate.

Marty, my problem with your MSN links is their upper banner takes up over a third of the page, covering most of a video or the story. I can only get a few lines at a time, making it tedious to read anything, so, I no longer bother. If the short description you give makes it sound interesting, I'll google the story to find another source.

I like Malcolm's story. I've had my share of farming mishaps, some of them involving tractors.

Malcolm, not sure if you are familiar with the “Get Fuzzy” comic strip or not. Anyway the character “Mac” is said to be from Manchester. So just wondering if you can decipher what he’s saying in the first panel today. www.gocomics.com/getfuzzy/2020/07/10?ct=v&cti=1693823

So just wondering if you can decipher what he’s saying in the first panel today. www.gocomics.com/getfuzzy/2020/07/10?ct=v&cti=1693823Roughly translated he is saying: “Wow, I am really tired of the whining and naughty actions. The Chinese have really crossed the line, haven’t they? On my oath, why don’t they just stop?” The stupid thing about the so-called "Mancunian accent" is that is just didn't exist about 25 years ago. It was invented by some up and coming youth musicians, who wanted to sound different from their parent's generation, but without sounding like Scousers. Liam Gallagher and his brother were two of the main culprits. There still aren't many adults that speak like that, so it is just an adolescent thing. Funny story. About 10 or 15 years ago, I was travelling back from the United States, I don't remember which airport, but the flight was direct to Manchester. As we were going through Emigration, in front of me was a young couple with a baby. The woman and baby were passed though, but the bloke, with the empty stroller, got stopped. I was called up to the desk next to him, so I could hear what was going on. "Good evening Sir, can you tell me where you are travelling to?" "Mannie". "I'm sorry, sir, where are you travelling to?" "Mannie". (The bloke is somewhat unsteady on his feet). "Do you speak English?" "Yerfeckinwa?" (Unsteady? He can hardly stand.) "DO..YOU..SPEAK..ENGLISH?' "Yerfeckinwa?" (Without the stroller propping him up, he would have fallen over). "You have a British passport. Are you British?" "Me?Nafeckinmancme." I was allowed through. I never saw him on the flight. There was an empty seat next to his wife and baby. I wondered what had happened to the stroller.

Can anybody explain why burning the American flag and bibles is a valid form of protest?

Can anybody explain why burning the American flag and bibles is a valid form of protest? In the same way that protest can take many forms. Passive non-violence to armed resistance. For me it's a way of say I object to the actions of the US govt without hurting anybody. This was started by Americans themselves. In the same way bible burning can be seen as a protest against those who impose their religious beliefs on others and do not tolerate any form of different belief or non-belief.
Because they are seen as being so emotive it make them a fauirly effective form of protest.

What do you mean by "valid"? Due to the First Amendment they are legal, but whether they're actually effective in getting people to change their minds to your view is debatable.

I was referring to the latter, Juli. In my view, protests are often not legal.
Chaining yourself to a concrete post to stop an oil delivery is illegal, but a valid way to protest about green issues.
I don't see what the burning of your own flag is supposed to achieve.
Perhaps if they were to set themselves on fire . . . . .

Malcolm,
I think people that burn the flag aggravate most people. In fact, I would think the point, or cause, they are trying to protest is lost once they start to burn the flag. The flag has a special meaning to a lot of people especially military personnel. I believe they have the right to burn the flag but it probably turns more people off than gathers support to whatever point the protester is trying to make.

To agree with Mank, we perceive the USA to be a Christian nation. Burn the bible and the flag together and piss everyone off!

“under God” was added to the Pledge in the 1950’s, during the McCarthy era, to differentiate us from those “godless communists”.

So ironically it was a politically motivated change?

Congratulations, frodi, that was a deserved win. Our bowlers should have been able to contain you in the last 10 overs, but they lost control.
I'd buy you a celebratory pint, but all your pubs are shut.

Thank you all the same. I know that ity is only a one off but it still feels good.
Mind you pubs that serve food are allowed to open with customers staying no longer than 135 minutes. However as with everything Irish there are ways around it.
Buy a meal for €9, a dirty dish is put in front of you, you get a receipt with "One Curry €9" and two "free" pints. If you happen to leave the pub before the 135 minutes is up you can leave your receipt behind so the next customer doesn't even have to pay his €9.
I passed one pub yesterday with everybody sitting outside shoulder to shoulder drinking cans bought in the off licence next door which was owned by the same family.
Congratulations, frodi, that was a deserved win. Our bowlers should have been able to contain you in the last 10 overs, but they lost control. I'd buy you a celebratory pint, but all your pubs are shut.

Kinda surprised there is no chatter about the massive explosion in Beirut. Read elsewhere it has been estimated at 1.15 kilotons. For reference the Hiroshima Bomb was “only” 13 times greater but that was a Nuke! Hope this works. Where I copied it from it was a before and after gif of a satellite image of the area.

Just try to imagine what two and three-quarter thousand tonnes of nitrate would look like.
I think the deaths will run into thousands.
