Welcome to the tropical zone of the Joke A Day Forums. The Drifting Topic never closes, never runs dry, and never runs you off. Anything is fair game in here. Toasts, birthday greetings, random topic drift, whatever. Ramble all you want. That's what we designed it for. It's just one continuous party.
We founded the Drifting Topic (or D.I.R.T.B.A.G, as some of the more unsavory patrons call it) as a haven for random chat. It's more than a place to sip a few, it's the place where all the silly comments, bad puns, shaggy dog stories, and other idiocy are welcome. Not that we don't enjoy a bit of humor in the rest of the boards, mind you. You did come here from Joke A Day, didn't you? It's just that the proprietors have requested that the rest of the boards at least attempt to stay on topic.
Sit back, pop a few corks, and help yourself to the peanuts on the back of the bar. Drinks are self-service, and so is the grill. Don't bitch if we don't have your brand, 'cause you ain't payin' for it anyway. Ray's runnin' a virtual tab! Drink hearty, me buckos!

Well, frodi, you won that one, but only with a little help from the referee - and an English coach of course! Cheers!

We didn't need any help from the ref. Your lot just played terrible and lacked discipline. It wasn't too pretty to watch but a thrashing is still a win.
As for the other match. I nearly felt sorry for the Welsh except for their cynical play towards the end. They deserved to lose then. They'll probably still win the championship though.

That is a horrible story but thankfully I am confident that not all the cops are that stupid.

My second cart was a Opel Astra which was the Vauxhall Nova under a different badge. They thought that a German name would sell better in Ireland than a UK name.

Is he awarded a base then? And it looks like it wasn't a big deal to him or, he has a hard head. What is the rule when the batter is struck? In MLB the batter is awarded a base since the pitcher should have control of his pitches.

Awarded a base? Hah! Nope, he gets nothing, apart from a headache, concussion or worse. And you will note in those days the batsman didn't even wear a helmet. It is the batsman's job to protect himself, he has a great big lump of wood in his hand to stop the ball hitting him. Of course, what the bowler wants, is for the ball to fly off the bat at a sharp angle, there will be a line of up to five catchers (the 'slips') behind the batsman. If they catch it cleanly, he is out. One of the big differences between cricket and baseball, is that the action takes place in the middle of the field, not one corner. If the batsman just nicks a ball travelling at those speeds, he has little control over where it goes; physics dictates that, and where the slip cordon will be waiting. This is a left-handed batsman, so the ball will fly off to our left. Behind him is the wicket-keeper (the one on the right) and a cordon of four slip catchers. If you watched the clip through to the end, the umpire actually tells the bowler "that's enough, stop it". Nowadays there are rules about how many times you can aim the ball at the batsman's head, and they almost always wear a helmet. If this is struck, it must be exchanged for a new one. ≈

What is the rule when the batter is struck? IIRC these days helmets are a requirement when facing fast bowlers.
If you watch the end, the bowler received a warning for persistent short-pitched deliveries.
Here's the current cricket law:

Okay, I thought it looked like the bowler was deliberately aiming for the head. So, cricket has elements of dodgeball.

Okay, I thought it looked like the bowler was deliberately aiming for the head. So, cricket has elements of dodgeball. Well I watched the Blue Jays at Rangers MLB game the other night and Texas pitchers plunked 3 Jays batters. You’re dealing with similar “strike” zones (don’t know the exact Cricket terms) and a batter standing adjacent to it. Sometimes a pitcher is gonna miss his release point or grip on the ball slightly and it isn’t hard to hit the batter.

Haven’t been able to get another forum I am on to load but today finally learned that their server host had a fire so indeed the site is down right now.
We had something like that happen here years ago didn’t we? Maybe not a fire but I recall an issue with our host interrupted us briefly.

Sometimes a pitcher is gonna miss his release point or grip on the ball slightly and it isn’t hard to hit the batter. The bowlers in cricket don't always aim to hit the stumps (the three bits of wood standing vertically with two small pieces balanced on top), very often they aim to make the batsman mis-hit the ball enabling a catch. There is an amazing art of where to exactly pitch the ball and place the fielders where you think they will be able to catch the ball as a result of that mis-hit.

Okay, I thought it looked like the bowler was deliberately aiming for the head. So, cricket has elements of dodgeball. Technically, the aim is to hit the wicket (aka stumps) that the batsman stands in front of, however pitching the ball short can a) disconcert the batsman and/ or b) tempt him into a rash stroke that may cause the ball to pop up, enabling a fielder to catch it and get him out.
Back in the 1930s there was an infamous technique known as Bodyline which was eventually effectively outlawed because it was considered "ungentlemanly".

Since becoming the Queen's consort in 1952, Prince Philip knew 14 American presidents.

Prince Philip was descended from more royalty than the Queen.

Think I read one of the cops (at least) has been fired. Totally inexcusable behaviour. Sadly though this is partially because of the NRA stance for “more guns.” US cops fear for their lives just stopping someone for a speeding ticket because they never know if the guy in the car is armed and angry. Sorry don’t want to get too political here but I’ve always felt that this was a factor in how US cops seem to treat people. That and, well, the Lieutenant also happens to not be white.

US Citizens fear for their lives because they can die after being pulled over for having an expired registration and the cop can't tell that they've drawn their sidearm instead of a f*****g Taser!

Malcolm, how do you feel about Man Utd joining the new super league? Getting kicked out of domestic competitions and players not eligible for internationals seems like a big price to pay.

I am in two minds.
1) It just cannot happen. The price is too high.
2) The money grabbing American owners don't understand the ethos of the game and will do anything for more money.
Either way, I'm glad I don't have a season ticket any more.
Ask me again in a week.
