I've got a dog staying with me at the moment. The next-door neighbour's alarm went off this morning, and it is ear-splittingly loud.
She slept through it.

I read online yesterday, that the US government was thinking of minting a $1 trillion dollar coin to ease their debt issues.
I didn't realise it wasn't a joke.

That's almost funny. How will they cope playing on real grass? Most American football grounds use plastic don't they?
Oh, and the game was this afternoon, not this morning!

In a game called "foot", "ball", it would be reasonable to expect a *foot* to come in contact with a *ball* more than a few times in a game...

either of the games that go by “football.” American football, soccer, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Australian Rules, Gaelic . . . That's at least 6 I can think of. And they all involve kicking as a major part, except one.

That's almost funny. How will they cope playing on real grass? Most American football grounds use plastic don't they? Oh, and the game was this afternoon, not this morning! Malcolm, The game was on at 9:30 am EDT in the USA. Seventeen teams play on grass and fifteen teams play on artificial turf in the NFL. The great Pittsburgh Steelers (not so much this season so far) play on grass. I posted that comment to see the reaction and I got what I expected. Let's see, they kick the ball on kick offs, extra points, field goals, and punts. I think I have said this in the past but soccer will never be as big a sport here as football. I have played both sports, was a goalie in soccer in a league years ago and played semi-pro football for a lot of years. I enjoyed soccer but I loved football - pushing a grown man in direction he never wanted to go and/or knocking the snot out of somebody with a huge hit. You just can't do those things in soccer. It is interesting to me that a ton of young kids play soccer when they are young in various leagues / schools. But, it seems very few pursue it past a certain level. All of five of my kids, including my two girls, played when they were young and two played in high school. The two that played in high school, two of my boys, were very good, all section and and all WPIAL players. One loved football better and the other basketball and volleyball. One of them played volleyball in college and made the team as a walk on. The other had a scholarship for football but screwed up his senior year, discipline problems since he moved in with my ex, and lost his scholarship, but I digress. I asked them about which sport they enjoyed the most and I knew the answers football and basketball. I think soccer isn't really televised nationally here and the young kids see football, baseball, and basketball on national TV.

mank,
I just don't think that Americans can see what we find so funny about this. The population of the world is 7.7 billion; 7.4 billion of those think football is played with a round ball. I know of no country except the USA, which plays your version to any serious extent at all. That's not to denigrate it in any way, it is clearly big business in your country.
You invited criticism by using the phrase 'real football' in your comment. Where was this match played? In a soccer stadium, because we don't have a single American Football stadium in this country. I must admit, I wasn't aware that half your teams play on grass, that just goes to show how little it matters to life over here.
Let me ask you this question. When does the USA play other countries at American football? The game here yesterday involved two American teams, not USA -v- England. England played Andorra this week, at soccer, in the World Cup qualifiers. Next week England will start a cricket series against the West Indies before going to Australia. What international matches do the USA play in American football, baseball etc?

Malcolm,
USA doesn't play international football. I do believe though the stadium was sold out? Could be wrong but I did hear the announcers say every team jersey was represented in the stands. I think they are going to play in Germany next year too. I think over 60,000 fans attended the game at Tottenham so there might be some interest in the NFL there? I think there are international baseball games, like the olympics that are played? But, I could be wrong.
And, to be honest it might be funny to others but since football is part of our culture it doesn't seem funny to me. It just seems normal.
Maybe in the future there will be a European NFL league that ends up playing the USA NFL champion for a world title?

Yes, the stadium was a sell-out, 60,000 I believe, but your comment about every team jersey in the stands means that they hadn't come to watch these teams, they were just desperate to see ANY American football. I'm not saying AF doesn't have a following in the UK, it does, but it's a tiny minority, and probably quite a few in those stands were ex-pat Americans. There was baseball in the Olympics this year, Japan won. That must have hurt!
There will not be European NFL league in our lifetimes, it just isn't played at any serious level. You say you and your kids played soccer, we don't play American football. There are just 70 teams, playing at any level in the whole of the UK. The Manchester Titans play in a motorcycle race track, which itself used to be a greyhound race track. I had to Google those facts. I didn't even know Manchester had a team. I have found one baseball pitch in Manchester, it has no seating.
You stick to yours, we'll stick to ours and we'll all be happy.

Malcolm,
From what I saw the majority of the fans were wearing Falcons or Jets jerseys. I really didn't see different jerseys for all the teams. That is what the announcers said. I did see some Jets fans who were fanatic and were cheering with an accent.
I think the NFL is great at marketing and I bet there will be American football in Europe in the next 10 years. I will bet a pint on it.

fans who were fanatic and were cheering with an accent. Probably American then. The NFL will play more games in Europe, yes, but they will be American teams, not European or British. Well, not British, I can't speak for the Europeans. Does America still have large numbers of troops in Germany? They may well have started teams.

On a completely different topic.
I see that William Shatner is trying to go into space, he might even be there by now. My very dim memory says that he developed some sort of dementia and had to stop acting. He was then cast in a series, playing a forgetful character. If that was correct, I can't see them allowing him into space.
Is my memory failing? Or am I confusing him with somebody else.
(This comes from a man who has had to write the names of his neighbours on a list because he keeps forgetting them.)

Malcolm,
I don't think that is Shatner. I haven't googled it but I just saw an interview with him on the news and he was fine. I do remember a show a few years back with him, Terry Bradshaw, and Henry Winkler traveling around and he was pretty funny and lucid.

I was right - about the character anyway.
William Shatner as Denny Crane in Boston Legal. "Denny suffers from memory loss and confusion as part of the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, but often refers to his troubles as "mad cow disease" when his utterances are confusing to others or when he himself becomes confused. While he is still trying cases frequently as late as Season 1 of Boston Legal, by Season 2, he seems to have lost most of his talent for complex litigation, though he still shows flair in appealing to a jury in closing arguments. By Season 3 he mostly serves as a figurehead at the firm, rarely trying cases and appearing in court more often as a plaintiff and defendant due to his antics. When he does appear in court as a lawyer in later seasons, however, he still performs well."
He does seem to be still in good health in real life.
James Doohan, Scotty in Star Trek, did suffer from dementia and retired from acting. Perhaps I confused the two.

And they all involve kicking as a major part, except one. All of them pretty boring to me. American Football has too much down time with no action whatsoever. International Football (Soccer to us - Which the US does participate in) is also too boring because it takes too long for a game to be played and just not enough scoring opportunities. Haven’t watch rugby, aussie rules or any of the others. Canada does have a professional “American style” Football league but we use slightly different rules. Our field is wider and also 10 yards longer. Our teams only have 3 downs to make a 10 yard gain for a first down. There are other differences too but those are the major ones.
