How do you barbecuers/grillers get your grill clean? Years ago I was given an ice-cream tub full of a white powder (!) by a chef at a local restaurant with the instructions: 1) Never use it indoors. 2) Dissolve it in boiling water, don't breathe the fumes. 3) Soak everything for 12 hours minimum. 3) Don't let pets near it. It works a treat, but I'm running out, and the chef has moved away. Any ideas what it might be? At Wendy’s we used a product that was called “Snowbrite” that fits that description for boiling out the deep fryer kettles to clean them out.

It could be caustic soda.
If you drop a small amount into cold water it would heat up.
Also get some litmus paper and see if the solution is acid or alkaline.

I have a friend who is a chef in England, he'd know brands you can get over there.

I heard back from my friend. The Royal Marines don't use caustic substances due to environmental concerns, so at work he uses something called Sanny Sink to soak, and at home he uses steel wool and elbow grease.

I've got a copy of Kathryn & Simon's appearance on the BBC last week. How do I upload it to here?

I've got a copy of Kathryn & Simon's appearance on the BBC last week. How do I upload it to here? You're probably better off to upload it to YouTube or some other video site and set it as private if you want to reduce the risk of it getting pulled. Maybe a less popular site like Dailymotion?

Having a weird issue on another forum I frequent. The text field for a message like the one this message is being typed in will not activate. I can browse and read and other are obviously posting but I cannot reply to any threads. No message to say I got banned for mis-behaing (which I don’t expect would happen). I can open PM’s and I can type user names in the send message box, I can type a subject but the message body field will not activate. I even tried sending a PM to a mod but the forum will not allow a message without a character in the message body. I even tried typing a “help” message in Word, taking a screen shot and trying to insert that into the message but again the message field will not activate. The pic uploads but when I click “insert into message” it won’t do it.
Tried from my phone and same issues.
I’ve logged out and back in. I’ve force quit my browser. I’ve restarted my iPad. Nothing has helped. I have not tried a different browser (using Safari for iPad. I will do that next.
Any other ideas?

Sounds to me as though you have lost your permissions. Can you invent a new user to see if you can get a message to a mod?

Sounds like a browser issue.
I'd try backing up bookmarks etc, then uninstalling and re-installing.

Try installing another browser and see if that works. If your computer is working fine but your mobile device is not, there's something funky with the mobile device. You can also Delete your credentials and cookies for that site and try Safari again. If it's important enough, do a restore through itunes.

I have a Dell desktop PC running Windows 10, with a USB webcam plugged in.
The problem I'm having is that frequently the microphone in the webcam stops working. The video keeps working. I have tried unplugging and replugging the webcam, and restarting the PC. Both of these seem to be only temporary fixes.
What can I do, other than buying a new webcam (which may or may not help)?

My iMac has updated it's OS and has decided that the drivers for my printer are now malware. I have had to reinstall it as a 'generic' printer, so losing most of its functionality. Thanks Apple.

What? I can’t even imagine how that would happen? The Mac should just about install the latest printer driver when you connect the printer to it?

"Should" is an awfully big word, isn't it Marty?
It's an HP4620. It was first introduced in 2012, so perhaps HP now think it is OOS and haven't built drivers for the latest iOS.
I've got a spare set of ink cartridges, so it ain't getting retired yet!

That's why I stopped using HP printers, my AV kept calling out the drivers as a virus. When I looked into it, the AV program was right, HP uses a portion of virus code to imbed their drivers deeper than they ought to. I like HP hardware and business' generally use a different driver; but for home use, no thanks.

That doesn't surprise me Stan. The printer kept complaining about non-HP cartridges, when they were genuine, even before this happened.
When I satrted working for HP, in 1983, they considered all their products to be Capital Assets with a projected life of 7-10 years. That remains true today for industry products, medical, analytical, microwave comms etc, but obviously not for computer products. That is why they split off Agilent Technologies in 1997(?), and just kept the HP brand for computer products. Now the very idea of keeping a bit of kit for 8 years is an anathema to them - the only solution is inbuilt obsolescence.
But is any other manufacturer any better?

I'm using Brother these days (on a recommendation from Shell). Rock solid hardware with drivers that don't annoy me. Pretty much my go to recommendation when anyone asks.

I’ve got a Canon MFP right now. It was working brilliantly but our network issues (still ongoing) muddled things up and at the moment it is using a default driver so I can’t do things like print 2 sided.
I’ll get it fixed, just haven’t had the patience to dig into it just yet.

I've got a HP at home (old pharmacy one) which is a nightmare. I'll probably replace it soon enough. I replaced it in the pharmacy with a Brother wihich is going a storm apart from eating up consumables.

We have HP at work and I wouldn't touch their products if I wasn't paid to do so.
I'm another Brother user. Her, I wonder what the common thread is? 🤣
