The new strain of Covid found in the UK has been found in Colorado (look out Stan). The man that got the new strain says he hasn't traveled. New Strain in Colorado

Wow, thanks Bozo Johnson, what a gift to give the world because you were more interested in ensuring that your mates in business kept making money than saving people's lives...

Hey y'all, check this out, it doesn't happen often, because this is me agreeing with Graham over something. He is spot on and has the receipts. (from page 1 of this talk)
I am a person that believes in liberty and individual responsibility. Over the last ten months or so, we have seen people exercise government power, sometimes testing the limits of it according to law, supposedly to keep people "safe". What have the lockdowns accomplished? I think the only things that this "pandemic" (it's not one) has accomplished is allowing people that have fascist tendencies to test what they can get away with before the people revolt. I read earlier today that something like 160,000 private small businesses have been permanently closed. Just strictly from an accounting standpoint, how many lives did this save versus how many lives has it ruined?

Just strictly from an accounting standpoint, how many lives did this save versus how many lives has it ruined? Nobody but nobody on either side of the political aisle wants to do this to business. Do you think personal income tax funds the government on it’s own? It is happening in every country around the world. It most definitely is a Pandemic. It is in fact the most significant one in a century. Oh, wait for it. They aren’t even sure this is the “big one”. Imagine if something as deadly as Ebola got out in the wild like this? Bankruptcy is at least a passing inconvenience. Death is still permanent.

I read earlier today that something like 160,000 private small businesses have been permanently closed. Just strictly from an accounting standpoint, how many lives did this save versus how many lives has it ruined? Sorry had some more thoughts to build on my last post. The people who do the work to help us deal with diseases? They are lousy at marketing. They don’t want to alarm people with all the stuff they are able to prevent because there’s no need to alarm you about something you have been protected from. But they don’t know how to advertise and tell you what a great job they are doing. But some loudmouth politician (I am actually not naming any of them because there are too many) who has the attention of the media and a budget can spread false information all they want. Certain people know if you tell a story often enough it will gain traction and people will start to believe it even if it is complete fantasy. People really are dying of Covid. Most are just getting some degree of sick from almost nothing to pretty bad. But, and this one is the big kicker, when you have a disease with no immunity the number of people who could need critical care at the same time just to survive will overwhelm the healthcare system on it’s own. Then all the OTHER people who need healthcare that used to basically supply the capacity of the health care system cannot be treated. Cancer. Heart attack. Trauma from accidents. Now all THOSE people are dying too because there is no available healthcare capacity.

43 years ago, I went to a friends wedding and came home with the maid of honor. She still hasn't left. Just found out that the bride, my wife's best friend at the time, passed away from covid today.

I just did some numbers and very close to 1 in 30 people in the US now HAS active Covid. Nearly 9.25 Million active cases.
That is really grim news!

The authorities in Lower Saxony in Germany who are trying to send out vaccination invites, aren't allowed to search records for the over-80s, because of privacy laws. Instead, they are trying to guess people's ages by how old fashioned their names are! Adolf perhaps?

When the positivity rate for my area is over 10% that indicates that one of every ten people I see when I'm out has the virus. Mask and sanitizer and distance!

Hey Gimpy, double check that “positivity rate” definition. I had thought the same and someone corrected me that it indicates 1 in 10 people who get tested test positive and may not mean that 1 in 10 actually have it. But yeah, mask-up and distance for sure. Sanitizer a bonus but the thinking is now considerably more certain you would not get Covid from touching a surface or that it would be incredibly unlikely. Airborne transmission is what this one seems to be all about.

Just as soon as the bits and pieces arrive I'm blocking up the pharmacy again. Numbers in Ireland are at an all time high thanks to Christmas socialising. All I'm leaving is an area about one yard deep at the front blocked off by new counter units with perspex screen on top. I know for certain that we have had people in the pharmacy that are supposed to be isolating as a result of contacts with positive cases and no doubt some of them were positive. The doctors will only deal with them over the phone so they come into the pharmacy looking for cough bottles etc or to pick up their prescriptions even though they have been told to get somebody else to do it for them. There are enough organisations, voluntary and paid out there who will do an pick up and drop off service so they don't have to leave the house.
From a business point of view it's not worth the risk and from a personal POV I have two risk factors so I'm not taking any chances that I don't have to.

frodi, is it worth having a quiet word with the Gardai? They should be willing to protect a pharmacy as an 'essential service'. You have to be protected, of course, but so do the rest of your customers, no matter how much social distancing you try to enforce.
(And can somebody please tell me why my spellchecker wanted to correct that last word to 'enforse'?)

You have to be protected, of course, but so do the rest of your customers, no matter how much social distancing you try to enforce. (And can somebody please tell me why my spellchecker wanted to correct that last word to 'enforse'?) It's hard to protect from ignorance and stupidity. The Guards look out for us as it is and any time that I've needed them I got a fairly speedy response. The pharmacy is only 2 minutes drive from the nearest cop shop.
It's things like an elderly customer who was wearing the same disposable mask two days in a row and even then it looked as if he had already been wearing it for a few days at least. He took the mask down to lick his finger so he could separate out a number of prescriptions. This guy isn't thick as he previously ran his own agency processing legal documents.
Or a methadone client who's daughter has tested positive. All the family were to isolate for at least two weeks, (the daughter for 10 days after the last symptom.) To facilitate this the doctor sent 2 weeks prescriptions with no supervision allowing her brother to collect them for her. She shows up on Friday and I express surprise that she is out and about. I try and explain the guidelines to her but it's like talking to a brick wall.
That was just Friday! I'm fairly sure that there are many more coming into the pharmacy particularly based on requests for cough bottles.
In relation to enforse check which language your spell checker is set to. Or it may be a custom word that you might have inadvertently added.

No wonder people don't trust the government. Hmm, perhaps the ex-President not understanding the figures is a reason why people don't trust the government...
But, no, it's all the fault of those pesky Liberals...!
