Nothing but crickets going on here. Remember when we used to chat about fun stuff? Seems like if you want to get anyone engaged anymore you have to get political. Shame really. I've spent the last half hour looking for prices and services on a drive thru car wash. The one I've gone to for the last 10 years installed new equipment and raised their prices. Basic car wash was $5 and now is $8 and it no longer includes an undercarriage wash. Old equipment got the topside cleaner too. What's a drive thru wash cost in your part of the world?? I care too much about my paint to use a drive through car wash.

I have a monthly subscription for each of my cars at carwash near me called Globe. I also get my car detailed every year after the winter. The carwash, Globe Car wash uses cloth brushes. The guy who does my detailing recommended the car wash. My cars get clayed every year too.

I have a garden hose and some truck/dog/motorcycle towels.
Living on a dirt road, they don't stay clean long.

No detailer worth his salt would recommend anyone but him clean the car.

Hand washes are the big thing around here. Before I sold my car, I could get a basic wash for about $7. The labour was probably all illegal immigrants being paid below minimum wage, but you can't drive round with a dirty car, can you?

We could talk about Man Utd winning 9-0 if you like? Was that unexpected??? It equals the record in the modern era. No-one has won 10-0 since the premiership started (30 years ago). There used to be an attitude of taking the foot off the gas when you are stuffing another team, perhaps taking off your main strike force and putting on some youngsters to blood them when you are 5-0 up. However, the total number of goals scored over the season can make a difference. I think it was about 10 years ago that we lost the Premiership because we had won the same number of points over the season, but another team had scored more goals. So now, if another team is on its knees, you just keep firing them in. And, of course, each goal scorer improves their own figures. No one will say, "He scored 35 goals last season, but three of those were when Southampton were down to 9 men". They all count.

Basic washes are about $8 around here. My town doesn't have much but we do have a car wash that has the hand sprayers and you do it yourself. $1.50 and my labor and it works just fine.

He has no affiliation with Globe whatsoever. Since my cars get clayed at least once a year, most times twice a year, I have no problem using Globe Car wash, especially since my detailer recommended them. Oh and I pay $24.95 a month for the one car and $19.95 a month for the other car. Every car you add reduces the price by $5. The basic monthly charge is $14.95 but I add undercarriage and buff drying. A single wash with no undercarriage and no buff drying costs $8.

Holy crap, you're getting screwed! I'm friends with a few datailers. They'll clear $1K on a typical detailer so when a customer asks for recommendations, they're happy to recommend places that will have them coming back.

I really hate that viglink redirect that this board uses. Makes every link unreadable without doctoring the URL.

But I don't use them much as I have a power washer that I use very occasionally when I can get the car into the drive. B's car is parked there most of the time. Also my car is 11 years old with more than a few scuffs and dents. Most of the panels are plastic so it really doesn't bother me too much. Also I don't remember EVER cleaning the inside of the car.

I use the Jet Wash (on low power) at the local garage for my bike, but with Shiny Bike Sauce, a cleaner formulated by a biker I know.
I use a long-handled paint brush to get into all the nooks and crannies, wipe it down with a microfibre cloth, then go for a ride to get it fully dried.
When I get home, I spray it with ACF-50 anti-corrosion aerosol.

I use the Robinson Detailing guy and I think it costs about $125 for my Chrysler 300, claying, waxing etc. I just purchased a Kia Telluride and that will probably run me $150 or so. I had my son's new Tahoe detailed and I think it cost $150 or more. They had to use some type of special solvent to remove yellow line paint from my son's Tahoe. So that was an additional charge.

OK, so you're not paying for quality.

OK, so you're not paying for quality. Jim, I have no idea what you are talking about. When I get my car or cars detailed they get washed, clayed, waxed. The interior is also cleaned from top to bottom. Are you saying I should be paying $1000 for a car detail? I had the prices wrong. I actually pay $200. The prices listed on the website below are typical prices in the Pittsburgh area. The cars come back immaculate. Here is their website I get the Platinum Package. Robinson Detailing

I am saying you're not getting a quality detail for what you pay. I've seen many $200 details. They do more to destroy the paint than they do to clean it up. A quality detail takes a minimum of 8 hours on a used car and costs close to a grand. When it's done, you get a reflection with zero distortion.

Jim, I would have to disagree, especially since the cars are clayed. My wife's Chrysler 300 always gets compliments. I think it would be ridiculous to pay $1000. I know our detailer comes and gets the car and returns it later that day or the next day. I went to numerous websites in Pittsburgh and what I quoted is pretty much the standard. Maybe where you live the the cost of living is higher?

Clay bar is only the first step in a proper detail.

Jim,
I understand that claying is the first step. Not sure if you went to the website. The cars are waxe too. I was wondering if the newer ceramic coatings might be a good idea too. In Pittsburgh during the winter a lot of salt is used which is not great for cars.

I guess it is. I at times clay my cars myself then pull out my orbital polisher and wax my car. It is quite cathartic. I know my detailer waxes the cars too.

We could talk about Man Utd winning 9-0 if you like? Was that unexpected??? I was reminded of the previous time United beat at team 9-0 by a letter in today's Telegraph. I was at the match; we were playing Ipswich at Old Trafford, the score was 9-0 and the game was into 'time added on'. As the United attack pressed forward, their 60,000 fans were screaming "We want 10! We want 10! We want 10!" The attack fizzled out and the chant died down. From a small corner of the ground, up to my left, where the few Ipswich fans who had braved the 4 hour cross-country trek to get here were corralled, came the chant "We want one! We want one! We want one!" This got a bigger cheer and round of applause from the United fans than any of the goals.
