Trust me, the range of beers in the UK would blow your mind. Yes, you can buy the pallid, weak piss that you can get everywhere else in the world, but the range of proper ales is just astonishing. I might even be able to find you a "sweet, creamy beer", whatever that means.

That was London, Marty, it's the same as any large capital city anywhere in the world. You will see the big name brands everywhere, and you will recognise them. If you had seen a pump in a pub marked "Samuel Smiths Old Brewery Bitter" or "Marstons Pedigree Ale" you probably wouldn't have noticed or remembered them.
I'm not a lager drinker, but those who are over here seem to prefer the European lagers over the American ones. Of course, some people will drink a certain brand just because its fashionable rather than a good beer. Peasants.

I did not ever drink a Budweiser though! It was actually disappointing to see it there. I do drink lager. My “home” brand Molson Canadian is a Lager. At the Maple Leaf pub in London they had Sleeman Silver Creek Lager on tap which was kind of a treat. Sleeman was a Canadian big-scale “boutique” brewery here though they did get swallowed up by Imbev (SP? One of the big multi-national beer/beverage monoliths) eventually. Silver Creek is still a tasty beer though.

There was an episode of Friends where the cast went to England. When they got back to New York, Joey was talking about how he would swim back to England for another one of those sweet, creamy beers. The cheap watery beers that you call improper and weak are not the only beers we have over here and they are not the only beers I drink. There are plenty of beers over here that would meet your standards, ye who take your beer so seriously. After a hard day, I don't want a flavory beer, I want a cheap watery beer. You can get a lot of those for a low price. There's a quote from the movie "The Magic of Belle Isle" that I love. It goes, "He took beer very seriously. It had to be Pabst Blue Ribbon. If it couldn't be Pabst, it at least had to be cold."

We do have weaker beers here, originally they were called 'mild'. Not really seen in London and the south, they were a working mans beer. Having spent twelve hours down t' pit or in t' mill, a man wanted to be able to rehydrate his body with a gallon or more of beer but still be able to get up again at the crack of dawn to do it all again. Something the soft southerners wouldn't understand. You can still get both dark and light milds in pubs around here. They tende to be 2.8/3.2% and substantially cheaper as a result. They still have flavour though. That's what I hated about the weak lagers - they tasted of nothing.

Fantastic article, frodi. Thanks. I remember those plunger things. It must have been trialled over here. There was a bottling plant at Runcorn, about 20 miles away from me. They had two ships, in which they transported half-brewed beer to England to be finished off and either bottled or kegged at Runcorn.

Speaking of Guinness I used to drink that all the time years ago even at room temperature. I went to the Guinness website and there is some other sort of "light" beer called Guinness Baltimore Blonde. I wonder if it sells at all. Personally, I don't like light beers. They do seem watered down to me. I will say I have had a Sam Adam's light beer since that is all a friend had at his house and I would say it was barely acceptable. I go to something called the Big Pour in Pittsburgh where you get to walk around for four hours and sample hundreds of beers. I am not a big IPA fan but I do like hazy IPAs. One of the most interesting beers I had at the Big Pour last year was an Habanero ale from a local brewery in Pittsburgh. It actually was quite good. But, I would say you have to like hot stuff. Guinness Baltimore Blonde

Of course, I'd forgotten, there used to be a Guinness brewery in London, but their product just didn't match the stuff that came out of Ireland. They reckoned it was because the source water was different. Dublin used water from the River Liffey, London used deep aquifer water. The pubs in England would get their supplies either from the plant at Runcorn or London. There was a line somewhere around Birmingham where the taste of it changed. Does anybody remembeer Guinness XXX "Triple X". It was around in the early 80s. It was a bottled brew, much stronger and bitter. It was said it was made from the leftover sediments after the proper Guinness had been brewed.

Why are most lite beers like making love in a rowboat? They're f#*king next to water!

I'm not really a fan of light beers. Miller Lite is the only light beer I buy, and it's my favorite cheap beer. Budweiser used to be my favorite cheap beer, but Miller Lite has replaced it.
I would say my favorite beer is Samuel Adams Boston Lager. That's what I'll usually go for when I feel like spending more money for a smaller supply of beer. Alaskan White is probably the best beer I've had, but I don't see that around here much.

Citrus and Tropical Fruits. That's lemonade!
To an Irish man there is only one type of Guinness. All the rest were so bad that only the Yanks or the Brits would drink them.
Yes, you can get Lite beers in Ireland but you would need to wear sunglasses and turned up collars in case anybody might recognise you.

The tiger-Pirate game was postponed. Doubleheader tomorrow. Got the Stanley Cup playoffs on, but don't know who I'm rooting for.
I promise to disguise myself as Elton John before ordering a Miller Lite in Ireland.
If I ever hop the Atlantic, I'll try the best beers you got in Ireland and England. Betcha, I'll drink that shit and be like, "Damn good beer, but not unlike anything I've had before."

Does anyone keep in touch with Judy? Looking at her wall, I see an older post from her daughter in law that she can't get online anymore.

I saw that. I posted a Happy birthday, just in case one of her family members does check her FB for such things. It's been three years since she herself posted anything.

I googled. Even though what I found is public knowledge, and we don't get much outsider traffic, I'm still putting it in the thread for her in the Officer's Mess, just because this IS Google-able.

I never remember to visit here any more, but I got an e-mail notice of the Judy thread.
Some of you will remember my former spouse B.D. How do I make a long story short? We divorced in early 2005 and I've only seen him once since then, when I returned Rocky the Road Kitten to him before moving from USVI to HI (I could only take two pets and he graciously re-adopted Rocky). In other words, we really didn't keep in touch after the divorce. No need to since we were childfree.
Imagine my SHOCK when I started getting calls from predatory lawyers last year about "my house".
The odd thing about that is that I have never owned nor lived in that house, he inherited it from his mother, it's not even in the same county that I lived in for years. Furthermore, we have different surnames. Also I got a new phone number back in 2013, which is obviously long after the divorce. So it was disturbing to get these calls. I have no freakin' idea how they found me and my cell number.
Apparently B.D. was not paying property taxes and the house was up for tax sale with the county and these sharks were trying to reach B.D., I suppose to make a predatory purchase offer. I told them all fo fuck off and then I tried unsuccessfully to reach B.D. for several days. He's still in Florida and I'm in California, so it's not like I could knock on his door. His only living relative is his sister, who I had no contact info for and she wasn't on social media that I could find.
So I got into the voter rolls and found phone numbers for his next door and his across the street neighbor. Unbelievably they each actually picked up the phone when I called.
Apparently B.D. has dementia. Each neighbor told me long tales for over an hour apiece. One of the neighbors had his sister's phone number, and the sister and I have been in touch ever since. She has no living relatives other than B.D. and not many (if any) friends so I'm all she's got. She got an attorney on the house situation and was able to save it from a tax sale. Much more, MUCH more long stories ensue, but I won't bore you.
She called me just the other day to let me know that after B.D. entered a neighbor's house at 1 a.m. with his German Shepherd, this same neighbor, who was the one who told me of B.D.'s dementia, called DCF and they came and got him and (another long story) now he is in assisted living. That's for the best, I'm not going to type out how he has been for the last (year?) but he absolutely is not the man I married 25 years ago.
His sister, who he always hated, who works full time and lives in another city, had to be his caretaker for the past year before he was finally committed by DCF. What an amazing woman she is to take care of a brother who has always treated her like crap...but she knew that she is all he has. It was really a hardship on her in so many ways, and I'm relieved he's now in a care home. She's trying to find a good home for the GSD and I referred her to a good GSD rescue.
Moral of the story: all B.D. ever had to do was to be nice to me and I'd still be married to and caring for him. But noooooo, he had to be an asshole, he was never physically abusive (he knw I'd throw his sorry ass in jail!) but the mental abuse was unacceptable. All he ever had to do was to be nice to me, and his house wouldn't have gone into tax sale, he'd get proper nutrition (another long story about health problems that happened during his dementia and living alone), and if I couldn't have cared for him at home at least he'd have gone into a nice care home and not some awful government thing that DCF put him into.
So boys and girls, be nice to your spouse, some day you may need them!
I keep up with most of you on Facebook...isn't that what we all started doing way back when? I'm glad the JAD forums are still here, even though I don't visit. Thanks for listening to my long tale, you all sure listened back when I was married to him.

Happy Birthday Frodi! Show us that birthday suit! I'd show you my birthday suit but there ain't enough eye bleach to go around.
No drinks for me until later. I'm out on the bike tonight. I have to go down to Marc and get my nuts checked.

Just to clarify. Marc put my wheel back on last week. He didn't bring his torque wrench so he had to use mine. He didn't trust it so he asked if I would bring the bike down and he would check it with his wench. Also I need to get the speedo cable looked at again as it has become dislodged.

Thank you. Grainne made me a vegan carrot cake (so that she could have some) and Fionn made some banana bread. I found out that I share a birthday with Homer Simpson and Santas Little Helper. (Yes Grainne and Cormac are Simpons nerds.)
This evening was spent in the shed trying to sort out the speedo cable. To get at the cable you have to take off the screen and the headlight assembly. I also had to cut the wires to the spot light that I mounted just over the headlight. I don't know if it has been sorted as I will need to take it out for a few miles to see. I can't get the front wheel to spin fast enough to see if the speedo reacts.
