What's up with Detroit's uniforms? I caught parts of the game recap on the news. Jeannette, I do believe those are their throwback jerseys. These days all major sports teams have multiple jerseys. I know the NFL, NHL, and MLB teams have at least three different uniforms that they regularly wear. I don't know about the NBA. I don't watch much NBA these days. The NBA game is so different from the days when I played. These days the players travel and carry the ball. There was no 3-point shot when I played. I know the "carrying" of the basketball has even worked its way down into elementary and high school basketball teams. Blue Jays are supposed to unveil one tomorrow. I’ve seen a “leak” photo but don’t know if it is legit or not. I hope not though it if it is it will definitely not make me want to get my wallet out.

For those not on FB:
23 years ago today, a self-styled funny man from Ohio, persuaded the world that AOL.EXE was a virus. Hiya Ray, how are you?
23 bloody years. Where have they gone?

I just got a friend request over on FB from somebody I don't know. Nothing unusual about that, I usually just ignore them. But this one is from somebody in Columbus, Ohio, JAD's ancestral home. Do we know an Evelyn Charlotte?

Do we know an Evelyn Charlotte? Could be a friend of Ray or Dennis who just adds friends FB suggests they might know. If you click their name through to your profile you can view friends and select “common” friends to see if they know someone you know. Otherwise a fluke and just another cloned account reaching out trying to suck in potential targets. I get a lot of those too. If the profile looks very new it gets blocked instantly by me.

Holy shit! I support a site in Auburn, Washington remotely. They are currently in the process of moving from one location to another. Yesterday, when there were only 2 people in the building, it got hit by a plane! My coworker that was there to help with the IT stuff had left less than an hour before it was hit.

Nope. Not the same plane. Last I checked, the pilot wasn’t named. I’d be curious if he were an ex employee of my company. There have been a lot of layoffs lately.. my site just announced mandatory furloughs and hourly reductions as well. I will be looking for the pilots name and checking Active Directory next week.

Rob's post in his blog about older and younger generations got me thinking.
I am the older generation, 64-years old. I am still working but I don't have to but I like my job. Most likely I will retire at the end of next year. But I digress...
I work with mostly younger people. In my office there are 17 of us all men. Our sister office in Texas has 100 people men and women. We use Microsoft Teams to communicate either through audio but a lot of times audio and video. I would say that most of the time, even in my own office, the younger people come in with their phones, and are not paying attention when we have meetings. They will literally be playing games on their phones. I have told them to put their damn phones away and pay attention.
This leads me to a couple of questions: Don't you think using a smartphone during meetings is rude? Can you go without your phone for any length of time?
There are times I forget my iPhone at home and I don't realize it until hours later. I can go without my phone. I have asked my younger coworkers can you go without your phone and all of them say they cannot go without their phones. They told me their lives are on their phones. I find that sad. More often than not when I go by their offices or cubicles their faces a buried in their phones.

I’ve gotten to the point if I am listening to someone talk and not doing anything else, I’ll fall asleep in minutes. I can’t even watch tv without a device in hand.

I don’t want to be on my phone if I don’t need to be but I would never be out without it. Usefel when needed but not needed all the time.

In the call center, we were NOT allowed to have phones or other such devices on the "floor" or in the training room, even smart watches were forbidden, and it was a firing offense. I would either leave mine in the car or, in winter, in my coat pocket in the closet off the lobby.
This job, we have to have a smartphone to use the MS Authenticator app to log in to various things. I hate that I have to remember it. I've had to turn around half way to work because I realized I had forgotten it. Fortunately, we don't have that kind of meeting very often. We haven't had a huddle in several months, come to think on it. Emails and a team newsletter get most things communicated.

Don't you think using a smartphone during meetings is rude? There's always the question of whether that meeting could have been done via an email... Graham, Our meetings, I will use our Release Readyness Review (RRR) meeting as an example, are with approximately 25 to 30 people at a time and take around two hours. We use the video call option in Microsoft Teams and connect with people in Texas and at time Florida. An email just wouldn't work at all. I would say that the minimum number of people in one of our meetings is 15 people and they last at least an hour. We do use email though to route the forms and electronically sign off on them through email. But, again, that only is if you attended the meeting. Sitting on your phone and playing games in a meeting is extremely rude in my opinion. When I run a meeting I will call out people on their cell phones and tell them to put them away.

My next question would be: Is what is going on in a particular part of the meeting relevant to all those 25 to 30 people? Does it affect them? Are they required to provide input? Do they have information to impart or questions to answer which impact that decision?
I've sat in committee meetings where there's been a discussion about a subject which has no relevance to me and there's nothing I can comment or respond to that would be of any benefit.
Should I be required to sit there and pretend to be interested?

Should I be required to sit there and pretend to be interested? No, but if you randomly shout "That's Bollocks" when someone is talking, you tend not to get invited to subsequent meetings. It works.

During the meeting everyone is required to say no or yes to a series of questions on our RRR checklist. You should be paying attention. These meetings are requirements for us to send out our products. Our products (software) go to nuclear power plants and you sure as hell better be invested. After the meetings everyone is required to literally sign the documents, each and every attendee. The way I look at it is there are adults in these meetings not kids put your toys away.

In which case I'd think that Top Management should make everyone aware of their responsibilties, rather than leaving it up to whoever is running the meeting, and probably make it a Disciplinary matter.

My Dad’s favourite corporate meeting story was at a company he worked for that was bought by a bigger company. The big-wig from the new owner was telling all the employees about how great things will be, nothing will change and the usual other stuff. When he was done he asked if anyone had any questions. Out of the back of the room someone said “Yes I have question. Is bullshit spelled with or without a hyphen?”

Some people need a steaming cup of coffee after mowing the lawn on a hot summer day. But me, man, I need an ice cold beer.
