I still don't understand the game, but looking the stats, USA sucks at cricket.
Why was the match against Ireland on June 14 abandoned without a ball bowled?

"The USA qualified for the Super 8s stage of the T20 World Cup after their match against Ireland in Florida was washed out.
"There had been tropical storms and flooding in the morning and over the preceding days which caused a waterlogged outfield that did not dry in time. "

The Phillies are beating the hell out of the Tigers tonight. How's everyone else's sports teams doing? Well the Oilers are not “my” team but they lost the Stanley Cup to Florida last night. On the plus side I won my playoff pool handily. “Cha-ching!”

My Pirates got crushed 11 to 5 by the Reds last night. The Pirates have three good starters, Keller, Skenes, and Jones but their offense is down right pitiful. I was switching between the Pirate's game and the Stanley Cup finals. I was actually rooting for the Oilers but it seems they ran out of gas. I wanted McDavid to get his first cup. He is definitely a unique once in a lifetime hockey player with his unbelievable speed. He did win the Conn Smythe trophy which usually doesn't happen for a player on the losing team.
I think there hasn't been a Canadian team that has won the cup since 1993.

I must admit that I was surprised to see the USA go through to the next round. Then I took a closer look at who was playing for them. In the game against England, 8 out of their 11 players weren't born in the USA. Some had even played international cricket previously for other countries. So when you next hear people complaining about immigrants . . .

I won $420 for first place. My lead was solid enough there was not much chance that I wasn’t going to win.

Not great for me. Up to tonight I had 23 other teams to support in the Euros. By the end of the week it will be down to 15.

Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels are on. Late game, because the game is in California. I'm not drinking cheap beer tonight. Though, I also got an 8-pack of Budweiser too. Curious. Europeans who think American beer is all cheap, watery piss, have you ever drank Samuel Adams beer or Alaskan beer? I could be wrong, but I think these two beer breweries would meet your standards. So, who's watching sports tonight and what are you drinking?

LOL Nothing worth watching barely until early October when hockey starts again! Well we did have the Jays vs. Yankees on last night. Enjoying watching Toronto trounce NY. And I will watch F1 too, possibly a little golf. But the races are mostly in the morning as is the golf when it is The Open Championship.

Time for "Cricket explained to a foreigner" again.
It's very simple:
* * * * *
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.
When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!
* * * * *
Got it now? ;-)

Just think of it as baseball without the excitement. Ok, so Cricket has been described as the slowest form of animal life... ;-)
(Not actually true, look up some of the great games of the past, eg Botham's Ashes and you'll see a whole other side you don't usually notice)

Tigers just blew it again. Another losing streak continues.
I gotta get to bed. My brother and I are going to finish tearing down an old barn at my mom and dad's tomorrow.

I know that Babe Ruth gave cricket a try. As I understand it, they tried to get him to play against a top English bowler, but it couldn't be arranged. As a result, he only faced a local team and, unsurprisingly, knocked them for six.

I have watched a few cricket matches over the years. I don't quite understand all of the rules. But, the one that seems strange to me is that you can hit the ball backwards in a match. In baseball that is a foul ball. I remember some years ago watching a match on a cruise ship and when the batter hit the ball backwards that team was scoring points and I thought to myself what the heck was that?
Additionally, I think a match can go on for days on end; is that correct?

In baseball that is a foul ball. I remember some years ago watching a match on a cruise ship and when the batter hit the ball backwards that team was scoring points and I thought to myself what the heck was that? Additionally, I think a match can go on for days on end; is that correct? You have to remember that the pitch (the 22 yard strip of grass) is in the middle of the field, not one corner like baseball. Yes, the batsman can hit the ball anywhere, thet's why it is so important that the fielders are placed strategically. There aren't enough of them to cover the whole field. You might notice that in some matches, there could be half the fielders, 5, close in behind the batsman. They are called the keeper and the slips. They are just hoping that the batsman doesn't get a clean hit on the ball, it just nicks off one side of the bat (an 'edge') and they catch it cleanly. The batsman is then out. Yes matches can go on for up to 5 days in some forms of cricket. A game that goes on that long is a real trial of the stamina and skills of the players, and is therefore called a Test Match. These are usually only played at the highest level, i.e. internationally. It's not as bad as it used to be. Back before WWII Test Matches were unlimited and just carried on until all batsmen had been dismissed twice. There was one famous game in the 30's between South Africa and England where the match had to be abandoned after ten days because the ship taking the England team home was due to sail.

the one that seems strange to me is that you can hit the ball backwards in a match. As Malcolm has pointed out, the actual area where the batsmen stand is in the middle of the field, not in a corner.
Therefore the fielding side must place its players strategically, either to stop the batting side scoring or to get them out.
Malcolm also mentioned the "slips" who are there to catch a ball that's edged from a fast bowler, but when you have a slow bowler who spins the ball, making it bounce unpredictably off the ground in front of the batter, the fielding side can have several players grouped around the batter to catch an edge.
These positions can be *very* close, hence why some have names like "silly mid-on" and "silly point", because if the batsman does get a good strike on the ball, the fielder risks getting struck very hard!
Here's an image that shows most of what are considered the regular fielding positions, of course not all of them can be used at any one time as there's only nine players available to fill them (eleven minus the bowler and wicket keeper)

That diagram misses out my favourite name for a fielding position - Cow Corner. It should be down in the SE corner of that plan.

I looked at that diagram. How many fielders can be on the field at once?

I looked at that diagram. How many fielders can be on the field at once? Eleven in total, but one of those is the bowler (pitcher) and one will be the wicket-keeper (catcher) so nine outfield men.

There is also one position that is not spoken off these days.
"The batsman Holding, the bowlers Willie"

There is also one position that is not spoken off these days. "The batsman Holding, the bowlers Willie" This has been researched quite deeply and people are pretty sure it was never spoken. There were only a limited number of times that Holding faced Willie, and the vast majority of the commentary is still available.

Does the batter have to swing at any pitch thrown?

Does the batter have to swing at any pitch thrown? He’s protecting the wickets. I don’t know if he has to swing but if he lets it go and they knock the lintels off the wickets isn’t he “out?”

Okay, I'm coming to understand part of this game, I think.
In cricket, instead of a "pitcher", you have a "bowler". He's called a bowler, because that's what he's doing. Just like in the sport Bowling, where a bowler rolls the ball to knock down pins.
In cricket, the wickets are the pins in bowling. The bowler is trying to knock down the wickets, and batsman protects the wickets by hitting the ball away.
After the batsman hits the ball, he runs for a base, right? While the fielders recover the ball and try to tag him out?
Eh, I'm probably still wrong.

How many outs are there?
