USA women had an impressive win over Germany in soccer. Gymnastics started yesterday too. The USA women led all qualifiers after all rotations. I wish that other sports would be shown. I watched dressage but wish they would have shown more of the bicycling over the rough terrain and the cross country horse racing. I will say this I am already sick of seeing celebrities commenting on the games. I think Snoop Dog has more air time than most of the athletes. And the Peyton Manning - Kelly Clarkson opening ceremony commenting was a train wreck. You had a retired football player and a singer struggling to make any cogent comments. Starting today I can only watch in the evening since I am at work which means I have to watch what NBC decides to show. I think there should be a separate channel or channels of all Olympic sports that a viewer could choose. discoveryplus.com
That's where B is watching whatever she wants. At times there is no commentators but usually there is.

I've been watching both the Men's and Women's rugby - don't understand a damn thing about it but holy cow is it fun to watch! It's basically the same as your American football EXCEPT you can't throw the ball forward. And you can't tackle somebody if they haven't got the ball. And to score a try (touch-down) you have to actually touch the ball down on the ground. And you don't wear full-body armour. Apart from that, it's the same. But not half as much fun to explain to foreigners as cricket... ;-)

Last night when I got home from work and there were two additional Olympic channels with Verizon FIOS. That means I now can choose between NBC, USA HDR, CNBC, and the two new channels. I kept switching from handball to swimming to gymnastics to boxing to volleyball to equestrian events. I need five TVs now so I can watch everything at once!
Oh and the Pirates were playing last night too in Houston. I was switching to that game too. I think I need six TVs now.
Pirates won 5-3 and came from behind. I hope they pick up an offensive player or two before today's deadline. The Bucs offense is lacking. The pitching is pretty good but it is hard to win games if you don't score runs.

Pirates won again 6-2 against the Astros. They also picked up a couple of players that might help them offensively. I cannot believe I am saying this, the Pirates have a chance to make the playoffs if they keep playing this way.

Ledecky won the 1500 Meter freestyle race again. She is a GOAT at long distance swimming. US women's soccer team beat Australia and are moving on to the the quarterfinals. The USA men's gymnastic team had a poor showing in the individual events.
Pirates lost 5-4 to the Astros. They handed Houston the game or, more precisely, Oneil Cruz handed the game to them with two errors on the same play. He made a bonehead move running from shortstop into left field to catch a fly ball that was definitely Reynold's ball to catch. Cruz literally ran about 20 or more yards into left field causing the ball to hit Reynolds. Cruz then picked up the ball up and then made an errant throw to the catcher.

I think they were penalized for spying on opponents closed practices using a drone and they got caught. I believe three coaches of the Canadian women team are now banned for a year. Canada's Spying Scandal

Feck you IOC and whoever runs Int’l Soccer.

But, good for Canadian women for overcoming that penalty.

They started the tourney with -6 points and still managed to make the medal round? If that isn’t a big Feck-you I don’t know what is. Meanwhile Summer McIntosh continues to destroy the competition in the pool. Just got her 2nd gold medal this Olympic and she’s only 17 still.

Simone Biles won the gold medal for the all-around in gymnastics. Suni Lee won the bronze medal. Katie Ledecky won a silver in swimming. I think USA won a rowing medal for four men. I only saw a blip. The medal count as of last night:

Having one of the largest teams and throwing loads of money at them will do that.

Of course the larger populations will be expected to win more medals, but take a look at this. List of medals per capita from 1896 to 2020The Bahamas and Hungary take the top spots, China is almost at the bottom, all four Nordic countries are in the top 10 - and, I'm afraid, the Great Britain team beats both the USA and Canada.

I saw something about the woman's boxing event. Something about one of the contenders dropping out after less than a minute because she'd never been hit so hard?

The person she was fighting was born with XY chromosomes, but was classed as a woman, even though he/she had been banned from previous events. Big. BIG stink about it. Report herePoor girl thought she was going to be killed.

46 seconds she lasted. The person she was fighting was born with XY chromosomes, but was classed as a woman, even though he/she had been banned from previous events. The report that Khelif had XY chromosomes came from Russian IBA President Umar Kremlev who told the news agency Tass that the disqualifications were because “it was proven they have XY chromosomes”, however the details of the tests have not been revealed.
The IOC, which is overseeing the boxing competition in Paris, does not test for gender, and there never has been evidence that either Khelif or Lin had XY chromosomes or elevated levels of testosterone.
In his comments to Tass in 2023, Kremlev said two boxers were given DNA tests. In the minutes of the IBA’s board of director’s meeting held two days after the women were disqualified, George A. Yerolimpos, the organization’s CEO and secretary general at the time, told the attendees the women had failed tests conducted by an independent laboratory. He also told the meeting’s attendees that both women had failed a different test, conducted by a different laboratory, at the previous year’s world championships in Istanbul, but that the results had come too late for the fighters to be disqualified.
The meeting’s minutes do not say what kind of test had been administered or the name of the laboratory.
Three people familiar with the details of the women’s case pointed out that the disqualifications came three days after Khelif defeated Russian Azalia Amineva
Both of the two women boxers competed in the 2021 Tokyo Games, but neither received a medal. Also Khelif has been defeated 9 times, so she is hardly some unbeatable "man beating up a woman".
The boxer, Angela Carini had already been struck hard in the face during a previous bout when she mistimed a punch and her opponent got past her guard. She quit the bout with Khelif because, having taken another blow to the face, she was having problems breathing.
Of course none of this has stopped the right wing in the USA and the UK (such as a certain Presidential candidate and his running mate) and TERFs and GCs (especially a well known and wealthy author) from making a "big stink" about it because it suits their transphobic agenda.
At some point the full facts may come out, but by that time the damage to trans people will have been done.

Report herePoor girl thought she was going to be killed. She was born with a vagina, and has always been identified as a female. She comes from a country that has killed LGBTQ people, so they aren't going to send a trans woman to represent them. She has always been good at sports, including soccer, and basically picked up boxing to defend herself from the boys/men who didn't like it. Sauce

If everone agreed with you, there wouldn't be this furore. You are spreading misinformation about a woman because of how she was born. I'm guessing you weren't born with anything that made you different from the norm, so you don't have clue what it's like and you think it's okay to shit on people who don't fit your idea of normal. There is only one transgender boxing in the Olympics. It's a transman who is competing against other men. But eugenic-transphobes like you don't acknowledge that because it doesn't fit your bullshit. Imane Khelif has been beaten in boxing. Nine times. She does not have an unfair advantage, unless you think there should be a limit on how hard a boxer can train. You did not state facts. You stated ignorance and bullshit, and that is how you're wrong.

I repeat,
If everone agreed with you, there wouldn't be this furore.
You are putting words into my mouth. At no point did I call them transgender. At no point did I mention eugenics.
I did state facts. Re-read my original post. It contains facts which are not disputed. No ignorance, no bullshit.
You are just trying to pick a fight whilst waving your disability card.
I am not interested in fighting you. Goodbye.

Why do women even want to box? Honest question. Really I don’t know why boxing is even a sport.
I refuse to watch MMA too.
There are lots of sports that involve sparring that do not put you at serious risk of a serious brain injury. If you participate in boxing you are asking to be punched as hard as your opponent can deliver.

Just another facet to this discussion pointed pout to me by Grainne.

I really only watch if I know at least one of the fighters. I was all set to subscribe to Netflix for the Tyson fight had it not been canceled. I won’t watch wrestling, either WWE or the real kind, and I won’t watch MMA. There’s just something alluring about boxing.
