46 found dead inside truck.I don't understand this. If the police have the truck, then surely they can trace the owner and the driver. Why would the driver run off and leave them to die? He's going to be in front of a judge very soon. Still got the death penalty in Texas? Some possibilities. Possibly the driver wasn't the owner of the truck, or associated with the owner. Human trafficking is a crime, and anyone smuggling people across the border does not want to be caught. Maybe the driver feared being caught and he abandoned the truck quickly. Some of these guys are hardcore criminals. They're in it for the money and they don't care about the people they're smuggling. They put themselves before the people.

Agreed and for Malc, when this guy realized there was trouble he probably ran. Very possibly just headed back across the border to drive the next truck. Unlikely but not impossible the driver was an American, more likely Mexican I’d guess. It’s a service for money, likely a lot of it.

In the UK, if you own a vehicle and the police ask you who was driving it last Tuesday at 4pm, it is a crime not to be able to tell them.
Do the authorities now think it had been driven across the border? I thought they had walked across the border and then been picked up by the truck to be driven north.

I’ve not followed the story so I don’t really know but what I do know is that people will do near about anything for enough money. If it were an American driver maybe he’s fled (which would be perfect irony) to Mexico. Isn’t that what the criminals do in all the movies? LOL

In America and Mexico vehicles are stolen and used in crimes. Possibly police will trace this truck to an owner who will know nothing about who was driving the truck on Tuesday at 4PM. I didn't see anything about them walking across the border. I assumed they were driven across the border. Could be either way.

Some of these guys are hardcore criminals. They're in it for the money and they don't care about the people they're smuggling. They put themselves before the people. There was a similar case in the UK a couple of years ago where 39 migrants were found dead in the back of a lorry
Also I recall a story where migrant traffickers in the Mediterranean were getting fake "lifejackets" made up and selling them to the people trying to cross to Europe. They were filled with cheap foam and, if they got wet, would simply weigh the wearer down and probably drown them.
They literally do not care about the lives of these people

It says in that article "Human traffickers often use trucks to transport undocumented migrants after meeting them in remote areas once they have managed to cross into the United States."

Thing is, they use stolen or junked trucks, use stolen plates, and pay the drivers in cash, so there's no paper trail there.

I watched the race on PVR last night (we’d been away) but that was crazy! Amazing that Zhou was walking around post race in the paddock!

Amazing that Zhou was walking around post race in the paddock! Initially the drivers had been resistant to the idea of the HALO protective device on the cars...!

Here's a poser for you. Cormac, Grainne and myself were having a discussion. How soon after an atrocity is it before you can make jokes about it? Grainne posed the question, how soon after 9/11 can you make jokes about it? There have been jokes and TV comedies about WW1 and WW2 as well as the Korean & Vietnam wars. I've heard some good jokes about the Holocaust. Loads of jokes about Northern Ireland and the years of terror there (25 years ago). Jokes about Muslim terrorists (current). So how long or are some things just beyond the pale. Maybe for this generation but what about our children, grand kids, great grand kids etc

There are several factors. One "formula" I saw was one year per adult who died, 3 years per 10-18yo, and 5 per under 10. It can also depend on whether you're laughing at victims or the perps. I mean, if the perps messed up and the joke is on that, you can probably get away with it much sooner than if you're mocking the victims.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s never too early. On 9/11, after classes were canceled I went to my dorm and kicked on some music. AC/DC’s “I feel safe in New York City” started playing as I saw the footage of the towers coming down. I don’t think I’ve ever heard that song again. Of course, it’s rare that I can’t come up with a joke about something. I was making jokes about my dad being dead before his body was taken out of the house and I was devastated that night. “If only the good die young, that fucker should have lived forever.”

How soon after an atrocity is it before you can make jokes about it? You can make them right afterwards if you want people to think you're an a$$hole...
Some people use humour as a coping mechanism (the original story of M*A*S*H was based on Richard Hooker's experiences as a Doctor in the Korean War), others just use "jokes" to punch down and make themselves feel superior: "What do you call X many dead [group of people]? A good start!"
So you might want to think about *why* you're making the jokes and think about what that says about yourself as a person.

I'm a big fan of crude humor and poor taste. If something offends you, oh well, I guess it was your turn.
Is it too soon to to refer to Ivana Trump as Donald's "Bounced Czech" ?

I'm in a Facebook group called "Death Stairs" that focuses on stairs and steps that are steep or otherwise unsafe. Yesterday, someone posted a pic of the stairs in Ivana's apartment. It got chuckles, but someone complained.

Agree with Mank on sensitivity! 9/11 happened to one country and was a disaster of proportions never before known in the USA. War has affected us all in some shape or form and become universal so the jokes roll. London had a great fire as did Chicago and we talk about roasting marshmallows. Somehow, I've never seen humor directed at 9/11 and that seems OK to me.

Over in the games forum I came up with Ticket Tout. What brought it to mind was on Saturday my mate Marc asked me if I wanted tickets for Fever333. He had just got 10 complimentary ones from a mate of his who is a member of the said profession. He wondered if Cormac would like some. I passed on the message and Cormac's response was "I wouldn't go to see them if you paid me!" Eventually one of Cormac's mates took 3 of them. Marc dropped them off to me at the pharmacy this evening along with 3 more free ones. I feel that the tout and promoter will be burned on this one. I did some research on them this evening. I agree with Cormac. I'm waiting to hear back from Cormac's mate about the attendance tomorrow. Marc's son Tadgh took some of the tickets as well. I'd love to know if they managed to double the audience with their attendance.

I dunno, there's no shortage of Starbucks in Italian cities and every small bar or coffee shop there does a better job.

When I visited England, I saw several fast food outlets in buildings that were centuries old, if not a millenium. It felt wrong, yanno? Not that the building was used, but that the tenants put up their plastic signage and decor, it didn't go with the feel of the building. Now I'm trying to imagine a McDonald's sign like an old pub sign, a painted board...

There was a McDonald’s in a very old “mall” in Milan near the Duomo (Italy’s Cathedral - like ~1,000 years old) and it just seemed wrong!
