Of course, one thing that I hadn't thought of, is that in these long Test matches we use a red ball; in the floodlit, short T20 night matches, they use a white ball which would be seen far more easily.
Anyway, they were only off for 20 minutes, and those minutes were added on at the end, England finished 180-3, which compared to their 121 all out, is a very good place to start day 2.
Mention must be made of Gus Atkinson, who was playing his first ever Test match for England today, got a man out with his second delivery and went on to take 7 in all. The BBC descibed it as " the best figures by an England debutant for 29 years." At one point he got three wickets in six balls, conceding no runs, known as a "Triple wicket maiden".

Three nail biters against the Guardian. Tigers won two of them. One more game for this series, tomorrow.

England is in the Euro 2024 final against Spain. I quick google search shows that there are four Liverpool players on the English team and only three Manchester United players. One must conclude then that Liverpool is carrying the English team to glory. LOL! But seriously, Malcolm, can you still root for the English team even though there are Liverpool players on the team?
I will admit I was at an Applebee's restaurant near me and they had the game on one of their big screen televisions. I was watching the game and I would say the game was entertaining. England scoring in the 90th minute made me think Netherlands had no chance after that since scoring in soccer is difficult and I know there couldn't be much extra time. Actually, I don't know how much extra time was added for that match.

Officially two minutes, but there were more substitutions during those two minutes, so actually I think it was nearer five. In terms of the players, I honestly couldn't tell you which teams they play for, unless they are United. My quick search, tells me that there were two from each team in the squad.

Of course, they aren't Liverpool players, they are England players. You have to remember, it's not just Liverpool that I hate, there are Manchester City and Leeds too.
Given that most football fans in England hate United as much as I hate Liverpool, if you couldn't support a national team with your rivals players in, England would have no fans at all, because there's always at least one United player in the team.

And a quick cricket update. After the West Indies scored 121, England scored 371, so the Windies need to score a minimum of 250 just to make us bat again. They have finished day 2 with 79 runs and their best 6 batsmen out. This should be all over before lunch tomorrow.

Lots of hockey teams in the NHL I hate but I will certainly cheer for the Canadian players from them when they play for our national team. I’d say the same for basketball but I just plain hate basketball in general.

Sort of on the same thought process...
My nephew played in the NFL. He was a lineman and was actually drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs from a division two NCAA school. He was there three years, then with the Bears for two years, Carolina, Atlanta, and ended up on the Browns team. My sister would root for whatever team he was on. She asked me why I didn't root for my nephew's team (he changed teams six times). I told her I can never root for any other team. I will always root for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I told her I want him to do well but I don't want his team to do well especially if he is playing against the Steelers. She went on to babble some nonsense that he is blood, etc., etc. I told her ask your other nephews (my sons) if they root for their cousin's teams and they will tell you no! In fact, my one son told me if he was playing on a some professional team other than a Pittsburgh team that he would disown me if I rooted for his team. I told him I would want you to do well but I cannot and will not root for any other team that isn't from Pittsburgh.
I would imagine soccer fans, if I understand them at all, have undying loyalty too.

So can you still root for the England team even though they have Liverpool players? The more I think about it, the more I think this is such a strange question. To me, and probably every other sports fan in the world, the answer is "of course". I was about to ask you if you supported any USA teams that had players from your team's rivals. Then I realised, of course the USA don't really play team sports internationally, so maybe you have never had to face that question. The USA must play Canada at ice hockey at some point, does the question arise then?

I've just seen the answer to my own question. Apparently the Copa de America is on at the moment, so you have presumably got all American countries sides playing so the question would occur for any soccer fans. And regarding the above clicky, Liverpool players are hated as far away as Colombia!

I support USA in whatever they play internationally, regardless of who's on the team.
The Cleveland Guardians are the only MLB team that I hate more than the New York Yankees, but if my nephew was playing for the Guardians, I would root for his team, for as long as he's on the team, except for, perhaps, when they're playing against my team. If my team had no chance of going to the World Series and the Guardians did, I would want the Guardians to win the World Series.

And if my nephew threatened to disown me for rooting for the Guardians. Fine, he can disown me, I'm still gonna root for the Guardians.
If my nephew was on any professional or NCAA sports team, including the Ohio State Buckeyes, I would be so goddamn proud. I'll even wear a shirt that says, "I'm a diehard Detroit fan, but while my nephew plays for Cleveland, I'm a Cleveland fan too."

Anyone for tennis? We're off tomorrow for Wimbledon. Tickets for No 1 court for Sunday. We might get the Mixed Doubles final and if not we'll be watching the mens final on the hill. I'm bringing a big bag to carry all the brownie points that I'll get from this trip. Saturday will most likely be spent shopping in London and Monday playing at being a tourist. There's not that much in London that we want to see at this stage having been so many times. Biggest problem will be getting somewhere to have a quiet drink on Sunday night when the Euros final is on. And trying not to cheer when Spain score. Radio silence until Tuesday evening.

I just love sports. More about the sports and family loyalty. My dad was in the auto body repair business. He painted cars. When I was a teenager, my dad painted Chris Spielman's truck and got his autograph for my brother. A few years ago my brother gave me all of his sports cards and I Googled several players, out of curiosity. Chris Spielman wanted to attend the University of Michigan and play for the Wolverines. Chris's dad was an Ohio State Buckeye fan and he told Chris that if he went to Michigan he could never come home. So, Chris went to Ohio State and played for the Buckeyes. I thought that was sad. Why couldn't Chris go where he wanted and have his dad's support? I guess I'm all about combating that kind of crap.

I was going nuts seeing the name, I thought it was familiar. He was from Akron. I knew him, vaguely, tangentially. My senior year at THE Ohio State University was his sophomore year, I think. I was living in a rooming house where some of the players' girlfriends lived and we met at a party.

That brings up a question I was thinking of. Within the dates of the Wimbledon Tennis tourney weekend 1 overlapped the British Grand Prix and the finals weekend overlapped The Open Championship. Those are 3 very high-draw events and it struck me as odd that they’d all overlap like that. So much competition for attention! Plus the Europa Cup soccer thing and the Cricket Match thingy. OK is that last one a ssmaller draw?

No Marty, they are all big events, but there are 60 million of us, plus all the tourists, we can easily fill all the venues.

People who like tennis don't tend to be petrol heads, and I believe the attendance at Wimbledon has been poor this week. Golf and football tend to be a different crowd, golf is very middle-class whilst football is rooted on the shop floor. Cricket is a bit different, it attracts a wide spectrum of people, but when the game lasts 5 days (or is scheduled to!) you have to be time rich to watch it all. Footy or motor racing is over in 2-3 hours. And in my opinion, tennis and golf should be banned. Yawn fests. Golf is like American football, something happens for a few seconds every ten minutes. Tennis is two middle-class central European girls screaming at each other. And, if they want equal money, they should play 5 sets. [/rant]

[/rant] I don’t go out of my way to watch tennis but I’ll watch a high profile match if a Canadian player is involved. Some of the rallies are amazing to watch. I don’t go out of my way to watch golf. The Masters is the one tourney I watch as much as possible. But if golf is on I can watch it. I play (poorly) myself and I get a lot of appreciation seeing the shots these guys can make knowing how difficult it is to do so consistently. I do watch F1 as much as I can. At least qualifying and the race. I’m not totally obsessed with following every little thing. I doubt I could watch cricket for very long at all. Football (the Euro variety) I don’t watch. Canada’s national team has been getting better though so I’ve watched a few of their games. Baseball is a snoozefest too. They’ve taken some steps to speed up the game. My wife likes it and we will watch the Blue Jays. Football (American) is also a snoozefest with 2 seconds of action every 10 minutes and probably more commercials than any other sport. I don’t watch it except maybe the Superbowl but if that is a one-sided romp I’ll look for something else. Hockey is where it is at though. Way more action. Incredible skill and athleticism on display. Nothing else compares.

I think that answers the question.

Speaking of tennis...
One of my sons was very good at tennis. He played in the single finals of the NJCAA Junior College Tennis championships two years in a row. He lost both times to a "student" who was a grown man. My son at the time was 19 and I would venture to say that his opponent was at least 25 years old. The man was a night school student from another country that transferred to a school in the US. It literally looked like a man playing a boy. My son's opponent had an unbelievable fast serve. I didn't see the matches in person but my wife did. I stayed home with our other four kids. The championship tournament was held in Plano Texas. She did send me video clips of some of the play and I saw his opponent's serve. It was unbelievable and difficult to return.
My son quite a few years ago also went to Wimbledon to watch tennis matches. I miss the days of McEnroe, Conners, Bjorn Borg, etc., etc. Back then I would watch all of the tennis matches. McEnroe was my favorite player.

That very point was made in my newspaper this week, apart from the British players, who usually lose in the first round or so, no-one has heard of the other players. Not because they don't care about the foreigners, but because there are no personalities anymore. The Williams sisters were probably the last non-British players I could mention. They came back year after year. Nowadays it's somebody new every year.
